Pothole Funding must be maintained

An amendment to the WNC Budget has been submitted by Cllr Ian McCord on behalf of the Independent Group seeking to restore a £1.9 million loss of funding to roads maintenance.

On Tuesday 13 February WNC Cabinet approved its final budget for the year. As part of the Budget the scrutiny process identified that the highway maintenance funding would be reduced by £1.9m in the next year when compared to this.

The reasons for this is that the money to fix the roads comes from a few sources – WNC own funds and then supplemented by one off injections of cash from central government. Central government announced that the cancellation of HS2 would allow it to redirect funds to councils for pot holes. However the sum total for the 24-25 financial year is £1.9m lower.

The amendment will restore that funding by moving £2m from the contingency to the highways maintenance budget, it further states that if central government give one off cash this is to be in addition to these funds and not to be substituted out.
